about Vermont Young Playwrights
Now in its 30th year, Vermont Young Playwrights exists to provide every Young Vermonter an opportunity to discover their authentic voice through playwriting. Vermont Stage, Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center, and a network of professional theatre artists come together every year to produce the largest youth playwriting program in the State; providing a unique opportunity for students to explore writing plays that give voice to their take on the world, resulting in work that is often funny, provocative, and personal.
Vermont Young Playwrights currently serves a loyal group of 18-25 schools in Northern Vermont and 4 in Southern Vermont. Students come from a variety of backgrounds: urban and rural, native Vermonters and recent immigrants. By integrating playwriting into class curriculum, VYP enhances literacy, communication, empathetic connection, and creative expression. Since 1995, over 13,000 middle and high school students have participated in Vermont Young Playwrights, developing 10-minute plays that give voice to their experience.
